Organic Modeling with Landscaper
Power to the People

Use the Path Editor to automate height-based modeling

Introduction

Landscaper's Path Editor can be used as an alternative to grid-based terrain modeling. In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to generate an organic terrain.

This tutorial requires:

Getting Started

First, in Landscaper, open an existing terrain (or create one from scratch). Open the Path Editor.

Create a path that hugs a contour of the terrain.

For modeling, the spline should be set to 0.000 Units Above the terrain, rather than the 16.000 that is pictured on the right.

Click Create to generate a spline in Pixels 3D Studio.

Move the Path
Now, move each point slightly inland. When finished, click Create to generate the spline.
Keep Going
Continue adjusting & generating paths until you have enough to represent the shape.
Back in Pixels 3D Studio

We now have a series of splines.

Select the first, then shift-select the others one-at-a-time, in order.

Choose Shape>Loft.

Tada!

The path editor is an easy way to generate non-grid-based, organic terrains. This is much more efficient than a 40x40 mesh, and will render much faster.

This method also gives you complete control of the overall shape. Spacing of CVs & the look of the generated geometry are entirely up to you.
