Beginners Guide to Positioning CVs
Power to the People

Brief Synopsis

Introduction

Those new to Pixels3D must learn the basics of moving CVs of objects to create the shapes we want. After writing my tutorial on the Chessboard, I thought I would demonstrate in depth, the process of positioning CVs. Think of CVs as anchors (like in Illustrator) or Vector objects where objects are based on the curvature of each CVs position in 3d space instead of 2d. Each object is based on a row, a column or both of CVs, and the curvature between CVs can be of any spline type. To make more sense of this use a plain Shape>Spline tool and create a spline using the different spline types.

The Constraints Palette

The Constraints Palette lies under the tool palette. With it, we can Constrain, Mirror, or Tag each CV for modifications. Pressed means that the specified controller is being used.

Point - control one CV at a time.
U Col - control column of CV selected.
V Col - control row of CV selected.
Mir U - mirror CV selected on the opposite column.
Mir V - mirror CV selected on the opposite row.
Mir UV - mirror CV selected on both the opposite column and row.
X Axis - constrict CV selected on the X plane.
Y Axis - constrict CV selected on the Y plane.
Z Axis - constrict CV selected on the Z plane.
Tag - control multiple CV's selected on one object.

Push-Pull Tool

The most basic form of moving a CV around is using the Reshape>Push-Pull tool. CMD-select a CV on a mesh for example, then select Reshape>Push-Pull and move the CV around.

Constraining
Uncheck both the X and Z Axis constraints. Move the CV and see how its constrained along the Y axis only. This can help us keep things under control..

Mirroring

Check Mir U and then again move the CV, see how its mirrored across from itself. This is greate for keeping our object Symetrical.

Controlling Multiple CVs

One way of controlling multiple CVs around the selected CV is to utilize the Flex Window ( CMD-b ).

Flexing

If we where to set the control of the U to 1 and moved our Cv we would pull other CV's along the U with our selected one. Also by clicking on the various curve icons, we can modify the falloff curve of the flex.

Pictured on the right are the 4 different forms.

Picture using both U and V to max 1.

Using Columns and Rows

Another method of controllng multiple CVs is to use the U or V Col to move our selected plus its column or row it resides in.

Using Tags

The most powerful method of moving multiple CVs around is using Tag mode with Control>Move. Just like selecting/unselecting CVs on an object you can shift click singled out CVs and then move them around much like the Push-Pull tool. However, the flex tool does not work using Tags.
